Slingshot Wind Foil – An approachable, innovative, modular system for all
Our goal in creating our 2018 lineup was to make foiling as accessible and approachable as possible. We want any competent windsurfer with the desire to try this amazing side of the sport to feel comfortable and confident giving it a go. The Hover Glide wind foil is a modular system designed to make anyone’s leap into foiling a success.
Slingshot Wind Foil Line-Up:
We’ll go into more detail about our complete modular system (carbon vs. aluminum masts, fuselage options and front wings to cross over to different sports) in Part 3 of this series. For now, let’s keep it simple with the basics of the system we have created.
- The Hover Glide is available in two distinct front wing profiles (H2 and H5 wings) to cover the spectrum of rider size, weight, ability and wind conditions.
- The H2 wing is a larger, broader wing that provides more lift and lower speeds and is designed for larger/heavier riders, lighter wind or casual foilers who want the most mellow setup possible.
- The H5 wing is a little smaller and is made for lighter or more experienced riders, faster speeds and higher winds.
- As a package, the foil comes with a the H2 or H5 wing, a 35.5 inch (93cm) mast, our patented Switch Fuse fuselage (more info on that later), an integrated rear wing stabilizer and shim and a deep tuttle box mount.
Foiling Flight School:
This is an example of how Slingshot’s innovations in kiteboarding add great value to what we can offer in windsurfing. We created Flight School as kiteboarding’s first multi-mast system to help make the learning process easier, faster and more approachable. It was an instant hit and has quickly been adopted as by far the best way to learn to foil. The benefits apply exactly the same way to windsurfing as the do for kiting. Much like learning to windsurf on a small sail, Flight School masts allow you to start short, make faster progress and increase in length as you get the feel for the wind foil under your board. The Flight School system features supplemental masts of 15”, 24” and 30” that can be purchased individually or as a package. This is an invaluable, and affordable, tool in the learning process. For less than $200, the aluminum Flight School package is well worth the extra investment.
Slingshot Wind Foil Boards:
Slingshot designer Tony Logosz has been shaping boards of all kinds for more than 30 years. To put it lightly- he knows his shit.
Our 2018 board line is designed specifically for wind foiling, in both their unique shapes and their reinforced build. These are not designs we simply re-purposed so we could rush into the foiling market. We put years of R&D and many, many hours of testing into creating these shapes specifically for foiling. The truth is, if you use a board that wasn’t designed for a foil, the box will eventually (or quickly) fail, and you stand a good chance of losing your foil when it does.
With that said, we’re not telling everyone they have to go out and buy a new board if they want to foil. A deep tuttle connection is the only one we recommend, and if mellow cruising is all you’re out for, chances are you’ll do okay with an old board as long as it’s the right dimensions (short and wide is the best. If you’re in it for more and you can afford it, a dedicated windsurf foil board is definitely the way to go.
Here’s what we have for 2018: Three distinct shapes, six sizes, one simple purpose- make foiling fun for everyone
The Dialer: For easy, approachable all-around wind foil progression.
The Wizard: Short, wide, snub-nosed foiling freak designed for intermediate to advanced riders.
The Flyer: Long, high-volume board that will put mellow lake sailing back on the map. Doubles as downwind SUP foil board.
