The Wing Foiling Dynamic Duo – Spencer Bros. Take Flight on the SlingWing

Wing Surfing's Dynamic Duo

The Spencer brothers are seasoned hydrofoilers in Surf, SUP and now Wing surfing, at the ripe ages of 18 and 14. They have been winning or placing at most competitions including downwind SUP and radical foil crossings. We caught up with them on their home turf  in Maui to talk about the the craze of wing surfing.

Q:  It looks like you guys are doing a TON of winging. How does it compare to Downwind SUP foil?

A: Winging is pretty different from downwind SUP foiling.  Downwinding you’re mainly trying to go straight downwind as fast as possible.  Winging is a bit more free, you can do jumps, turns, catch waves, and go upwind OR downwind.

Q:  How much time are you spending percentage wise Surf Foil/ WIng Foil/ SUP downwind FOil??

A:  What we do mostly depends on the time of year. In the summer we spend most of our time downwind foiling and wing foiling and in the winter we spend more time surf foiling and winging.

Q:  What are the top 5 things you like most about winging?

1.  It’s so easy to use, you just pump it up and you’re ready to go!

2.  When you want to you can go fast , extremely fast downwind.

3.  You can jump really high, especially when it’s windy.

4.  You can catch lots of waves without having to paddle back out.

5.  It’s actually easy to go upwind.

Q:  Living in Hawaii how has COVID changed your recreation or has it?

A: The virus hasn’t really changed our daily life. We are lucky enough that we’re still allowed to go in the ocean. We also do online school so we have been able to continue with our classes as usual.

Q: In Hawaii where you live there is currently a tourist quarantine of 14 days! Has that given you guys more space out on the water? Are there less tourists and do you think they are adhering to the requested quarantine?

A:  We have definitely noticed less tourists around the island but not much out in the water. When there are lots of tourists they mostly stay on the other side of the island so we haven’t noticed much of a change out in the water. We’ve definitely been trying to find spots to foil that are less crowded so we can keep our distance from people.

Thanks Guys! We really look forward to what you conquer next!

Mastering the sport of Wing Surfing comes from hours of practice. We think the Spencer Bros. have got it down!
